About Us

The Devonport Agricultural & Pastoral Society was formed in 1908 by some notable local Farmers
and Businessmen. The Devonport Showgrounds was its home from 1908 – 2022.
Since its inception, the purpose of the Society has been to promote and educate the public on all things
agriculture. The main fields of focus included the improvement of the breed of stock and
the treatment of its diseases and the collection and dissemination of important facts relating to
Tasmania’s soil and climate and the adaptability of crops to these conditions.

The first Devonport Show was held in November 1908 as a way to promote the improvement of
agriculture and new farming methods, and to encourage agricultural pursuits by awarding prizes for
exhibitions and competitions. Our show
included competitions such as beef, dairy, sheep, goats,
hack horses, show jumping, poultry, home industries, as well as children’s and showgirl
competitions.
The animal nursery, agricultural demonstrations, sideshow alley, trade spaces for local businesses, fine
food, live music, exciting performers and fireworks all formed part of the Show’s festivities.

The Devonport Agricultural &Pastoral Society is now in the process of carefully assessing the future,
and how it can most excellently achieve its charter to advocate for the promotion and
improvement of agriculture in the area, for the benefit of both the industry and the broader
community.

In 2023 the Devonport Ag Society committee voted to trade under the name Mersey Ag Society.
